Step 1: Select and Reserve a Name Choosing a name for your business to register is the first step. This can be done online. You will submit an application for your business with two different names to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The CAC will check its database to see if the name is already in use or if there are any names that are similar to it. The CAC will reserve the name for you for 60 days if the name is approved. During this period it is normal that you will finish the enrollment interaction for your business name.

Step 2: Complete the Business Name Registration Forms. This step can also be completed online, just like step 1. The data expected to be finished incorporates:

  • Approved Name of the Business
  • General Nature of the Business
  • Address of the Business
  • Name, Address, Occupation and other details of the Proprietors of the Business
  • Signature of the Proprietors

Step 3: Payment of the CAC Filing Fees: The fees can be paid online.

Step 4: Submitting the Forms After the payment has been approved, you can submit the forms online. The CAC will look over the documentation and, if everything is in order, will notify the registrant that the application has been approved and that the Business Name Certificate is ready for collection.

Ideally, the entire procedure should take about a week, depending on the CAC’s workload at the time.
