Brazil attacker Philippe Coutinho opened scoring for the Catalans after just two minutes of action through a well taken free kick.

Lionel Messi doubled his side’s lead in the 12th minute with a superb finish after connecting with a Luis Suarez’s pass.

Luis Suarez made it three for the hosts in the 63rd minute after beautifully scoring from the spot kick, while Ivan Rakitic’s 88th minute strike sealed the win for Barca.

Despite enjoying an impressive start to the Champions League season, the Bluagranas have struggled in La Liga this term.

They suffered their first defeat of the season after losing 2-1 to Leganes away from home and have also drawn three of their last eight topflight encounters.

Coach Ernesto Valverde were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Valencia in their last Spanish League meeting but had to bounce back to winning ways and get their title chase back on track.

This win push Barcelona back to the top of the table with 18 points from nine games as they will battle Real Madrid in the first leg of this season’s El Clasico at the Camp Nou.

However, their captain and talisman, Lionel Messi may be doubtful for the game after being substituted in this evening’s meeting.

He appeared to have broken his arm but the team’s doctors will have to check him out to know the extent of the damage.

Barcelona will also travel to Italy next week to battle Inter Milan in their Champions League group encounter.

Akahi News earlier reported that Barcelona beat Premier League club Tottenham 4-2 in their Champions League encounter at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night, October 3.

A brace from Lionel Messi and one goal each from Ivan Rakitic and Philippe Coutinho gave the Spanish side their second straight UCL win this season.

They battle Inter Milan in their next meeting in Italy next Wednesday, but might likely be without injured Messi.
